| KAMPAI - One of Oxnard's
BEST KEPT Secrets Review by Elmer Dills, Restaurant Critic - Channel 7 KABC Los Angeles - There's a well-hidden 'jewel' of a restaurant in Oxnard, called Kampai. But because this restaurant has become so popular with its regulars, it's wise to make reservations for one of their cozy tables, where this Japanese restaurant could well be one of the more enjoyable dining experiences in town.
The polite, talented chefs have good reason to be proud of their culinary skills which they show off with personality and flair, cooking to order, right at the tables in true 'beni-hana' tradition.
All dinners include generous appetizers, starting with a crisp green salad seasoned with a ginger-based dressing, Samurai chicken soup with noodles, sauteed vegetables, specially seasoned steam rice and a generous portion of Teppan shrimp.
I tasted the Hibachi Chicken and Teriyaki Steak. Both dishes were tender and perfectly spiced. Other items include Haru, a Hibachi Steak and Chicken combination, Fuyu, a New York Steak with Scallops and Shrimp, and the Aki, Filet Mignon and Lobster. I was told by some loyal Kampai diners this is a favorite dish they order again and again - I'll have to try it.
Young diners can choose from their "Karate Kid's" menu, including appetizers.
